Our services

We can review any written content, and specialise in the proofreading, copyediting and substantive editing.

We also assist with:

  • interpreting academic writing and referencing requirements
  • optimising images for print and online publishing
  • understanding research data collection methods
  • use of software applications including SPSS, Endnote, Photoshop and others
  • website structure and usability.

We have a network of contacts in publishing and brand development, and can refer you to our trusted colleagues where appropriate.

Proofreading

Proofreading is an independent review of your content prior to its submission for assessment or publishing. It is the final polish to a completed document. Ideally, its output will be the version submitted or published.

Our proofreading service includes reviewing, where appropriate:

  • Australian/US English usage
  • chapter, section, table, illustration and page numbering
  • consistency of numbered/bulleted lists and sentence/title case
  • heading, paragraph and page formatting
  • publishing style according to academic or institutional style guide requirements
  • referencing
  • spelling and grammar.

Copyediting

Copyediting addresses a document’s accuracy, clarity and consistency. It is the tidying up for presentation stage, conducted after all the hard work has been done.

Our copyediting service includes providing, where appropriate, feedback on:

  • passages of content that require clarification
  • optimising the format of images, tables and diagrams
  • potential subjectivity and bias
  • references to gender and marginalised groups
  • use of passive voice
  • use of tense
  • testing embedded hyperlinks.

For websites, where content is not accessed linearly, we will also ensure that the:

  • content integrates into context whilst web pages make sense independently
  • content is expressed as a singular source of truth
  • site structure makes sense from a user perspective.

You have exceeded my expectations: Not only did you look at the content itself and made some really good suggestions, but you also made sure web structure and navigation stack up logically. – Melina, business owner, Hamburg

Substantive editing

Substantive editing addresses structure, style and presentation, and tailors content to its intended audience.

We provide one-on-one support for you to:

  • identify and appeal to your target audience
  • prioritise your ideas and develop them into content
  • clarify your language and develop a consistent voice and tone
  • where appropriate, stay on track to address assessment criteria.

Academic editing

We strictly adhere to the Institute of Professional Editors’ guidelines for academic editing. We will not ghost-write academic content nor will we endorse plagiarised content under any circumstances.

Depending on the work required, we can review your:

  • document body content
  • title page
  • synopsis
  • tables
  • diagrams, illustrations and images that are part of the body content
  • reference list or bibliography.

You may need to submit some of the following items for assessment. Unless you specifically want them reviewed, we will not need to see:

  • a statement of originality
  • a statement acknowledging co-authorship
  • acknowledgment of published papers included
  • a statement acknowledging any assistance you received
  • lists of diagrams, tables and illustrations/images
  • any supplementary materials used
  • appendices.

Your supervisor or tutor can advise you regarding:

  • content substance
  • interpretation of research literature and data
  • use of tables, diagrams, illustrations and images
  • use of technical and specialised terminology.
